The superego is formed later in life
to balance identification. It is formed and separated from
identification through our education, parental guidance, and our sense
of community and beliefs. People who are careful with their money can
thank their superego.
The ego is the driver who makes the decisions. Decide between the devil
(the id) and the angel (the superego) on each shoulder (yes, all those
cartoons you've seen are partially true). We have voices in our minds,
and it's up to the ego to decide which one to fulfill. Your goal is to
satisfy identification in some way while serving the superego.
Quick-to-get-rich schemes and fad weight-loss diets are naturally
popular because they satisfy identification and at the same time cater
to the superego. The ego's work is complete when it sees something like
this. The appeal of "fast" comes from the innate desire for instant
gratification, so be careful what seems too good to be true (often it
is) when you are looking to make money fast.
